TOP FIVE WAYS TO CUT FUEL
COSTS
Get more miles out of every gallon of fuel by maintaining your vehicle with a few simple services. By making fewer stops at the pump, you'll save money!
1. Air Filter
An air filter clogged with dirt, dust or bugs chokes off the air and creates a "rich" mixture-too much gas being burned for the amount of air-which wastes gas and causes the engine to lose power. Replacement intervals depend on where and how you drive, so have your technician check your air filter during regular maintenance.
2. Spark Plugs
A vehicle normally has four, six, or eight spark plugs, which fire as many as 3 million times every 1,000 miles, resulting in a lot of heat and electrical and chemical erosion. A dirty spark plug causes misfiring, which wastes fuel. Have your technician replace your spark plugs as recommended by your vehicle manufacturer.
3. Oxygen Sensors
When it comes to improving your vehicle's fuel economy, this is one of the top ways to make a noticeable difference. Properly functioning oxygen sensors are good for the environment and can save hundreds of dollars in fuel costs over their life. Replacement intervals for oxygen sensors are similar to those for spark plugs, ranging from 30,000 miles to 100,000 miles, depending upon the type of sensor.
4. Properly Inflated Tires
When tires aren't inflated properly, it's like driving with the parking brake on. underinflated tires can cut fuel economy by 2% per pound, which means if your tire pressure is 27 pounds per square inch (psi) when it should be 32 psi, you've reduced your gas mileage by 10%! Your Auto Care technician will make sure your tires are properly inflated when you come in for preventive maintenance, but it's a good idea to check your tire pressure regularly between visits, also. A simple tire gauge can quickly tell you if you're wasting gas because of underinflated tires.
5. Oil & Filter Change
Clean oil reduces friction between moving parts in your engine, increasing fuel economy and reliability. It also removes harmful deposits, extending the life of your engine. Check your vehicle's owner's manual for the recommended oil and filter change schedule. Most maunfacturers recommend changing your engine oil and filter every 3 month/3,000 miles.

Ball Joints: Have you ever seen a car on the side of the road, sitting on the ground, with the front wheel stuffed up inside the fender? Well, that's what happens when a ball joint breaks. It's fairly scary, and quite dangerous. Replacing them at the first sign of looseness is always the best solution, and checking them at every oil change interval is a great habit to get into. We have a variety of brands in stock that will fit every budget.
Shocks & Struts : If your car feels more like a boat, swaying up and down endlessly over every bump, or if it has a sad saggy stance, you may need new shocks or struts. They typically lose pressure after years of dampening bumps in the road. Replacing them often makes your car feel amazing again. We carry struts with and without coil springs in a vast array of brands. Vehicle manufacturers recommend shock or strut replacement at 50,000 miles. Did I mention we inspect them at no charge.
Leaf Springs & Shackles : You don't appreciate how awesome working leaf springs and shackles are until they are rotted or broken. They make an unbelievable racket when they break, and usually make your vehicle quite unstable. It's sort of like riding an ill tempered bull, but you don't have a rope to hold on to. At Haller Automotive we can tame that bull and get you back on the road safely.
